I'm Dr. Laurie Dymes, a certified dyslexia interventionist with a Ph.D. in reading education, 20 years in the classroom, and one question that drives everything I do: what does this child need to become a confident reader?
How It Works
Most families come to me after years of frustration. Here's what happens once you reach out.
We talk about your child. What you're seeing, what school has told you, what concerns you most. No cost, no commitment.
Nine targeted reading evaluations that show exactly where your child is, mapping their specific strengths and the specific gaps holding them back.
You get a written Literacy Analysis Report with clear findings and an intervention plan built from your child's results. Not a template.
One-on-one sessions using UFLI and Orton-Gillingham methods, targeting exactly what the assessment revealed. Progress tracked session by session.
Meet Your Interventionist
I've spent 20 years in middle school classrooms learning why some children struggle to read and, more importantly, what actually changes that. I'm a licensed educator, a doctoral researcher, a certified dyslexia interventionist, and an adjunct professor at UNC Charlotte. But what matters most is this: I've sat across from hundreds of kids who were told they were "slow" or "not trying hard enough," and I've watched them read confidently once someone figured out what they actually needed.
I founded Owl Literacy Academy because too many families spend years bouncing between tutors, specialists, and school meetings without getting clear answers. The CRISP assessment gives those answers. The structured literacy intervention that follows is built on exactly what your child's results tell me, not a generic program.
Services
Every service starts from the same place: understanding exactly where your child is as a reader right now.
Structured literacy sessions using UFLI and Orton-Gillingham methods, targeting the specific skills your child's assessment identified. Multisensory, systematic, progress-tracked every session.
Nine targeted reading evaluations that produce a complete picture of your child's literacy profile: specific strengths, specific gaps, and a written Literacy Analysis Report with a clear intervention plan.
Navigating school meetings can be overwhelming. I'll help you understand your child's evaluation results, prepare for IEP or 504 meetings, and know what accommodations to ask for.
Professional development for school teams on structured literacy, dyslexia identification, and classroom accommodations. Designed and delivered by a doctoral practitioner who still teaches in a public school.
Not sure where to start? A 45-minute conversation where I learn about your child, review what you already know, and help you figure out the right next step, whether that's with me or someone else.
I also run Lit & Logic on Teachers Pay Teachers — spiral review resources, grammar activities, and reading comprehension tools for middle school ELA, grades 5-8. Built from the same standards-aligned approach.
